Vice President, Corporate Controller


Based in San Francisco and reporting to the CFO, the Vice President, Corporate Controller is a critical leadership position at VIR that will help chart the course of the company’s growth, the development of its culture, and the tone and pace of the Finance function. The Corporate Controller is responsible for building, leading, and continuously improving the company’s Accounting functions including: general accounting, cash disbursement, revenue management (in the future), internal and external reporting, controls and audit, technical accounting, budgeting, and financial systems.

Specific responsibilities include:
• Hiring, training, and developing staff to meet current needs and objectives for future growth
• Establishing and implementing general accounting, cash disbursement, consolidation, and close policies and procedures
• Leading internal management reporting and, in time, external reporting including SEC filings and other public documents like S1, Annual Report, Quarterly Reports, and certain financial sections of the company’s Annual Proxy Statement
• Managing audit processes and relationships with external auditors, the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors, and external agencies. Assuring protection for the company’s assets through the development and maintenance of internal controls and contracting for proper insurance coverage
• Providing accounting judgements on contracts and Corporate Development initiatives to ensure leadership understanding of financial implications
• Administering tax policies and procedures and working with outside tax advisors to forecast tax liabilities and file all required tax returns
• Participating in the annual budget process, including operational and capital planning, and periodic updates to the budget throughout the year
• Keeping current on accounting and financial reporting trends: e.g., new SEC/US GAAP accounting pronouncements, disclosure trends
• Developing collaborative working relationships with leaders throughout the organization to ensure strong partnership between finance and the business
• Working closely with IT to manage and upgrade financial systems to improve efficiency and effectiveness of systems and staff

Candidate profile
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree and CPA (required), Masters in Accounting or MBA (a plus), and 10+ years of accounting and financial management experience, preferably in both Big 4 public and in private accounting settings
• Life science and/or complex high-tech organization experience, ideally from a revenue-stage company with internal manufacturing and supply chain capabilities, with exposure to the Board of Directors
• SEC reporting experience and experience negotiating complex accounting issues with external auditors
• Track record of effectively partnering with others, driving financial results, and successfully rolling out new processes and standards, as well as experience with systems upgrades and implementations
• Proven experience identifying, recruiting, developing and retaining exceptionally strong talent (evaluated by size of teams led; scaling teams and how that was accomplished; team members who have been promoted/succeeded through this executives’ development), forming cohesive teams, and leading them through progressive organizational change
