Carey Hwang, M.D., Ph.D., has been with Vir since 2021 and currently serves as Senior Vice President, Clinical Research, and Interim Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Hwang is responsible for leading the Company’s global clinical development functions, including Clinical Research, Operations, Biometrics, Pharmacovigilance & Risk Management and Clinical Pharmacology, as well as overseeing the Company’s Medical Affairs division. Dr. Hwang’s industry career has been dedicated to the development of novel therapies to address some of the world’s most serious infectious diseases, including HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and hepatitis delta. 

Dr. Hwang’s industry career began at Bristol Myers Squibb in exploratory clinical and translational research focused on early phase clinical development of HIV and hepatitis C treatments. He joined Merck & Co. in 2016, where he served as Executive Director and Product Development Lead in Global Clinical Development – Infectious Diseases and led the worldwide development and approval of two treatments for HIV.

Dr. Hwang received his bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from Princeton University and his M.D. and Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology from West Virginia University. He completed his internal medicine residency and infectious diseases fellowship at Vanderbilt University.
