David Liu, M.D., Ph.D.

EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT AND CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER

David Liu, M.D., Ph.D., serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer. He oversees clinical development, medical affairs, and regulatory affairs functions. Dr. Liu brings more than 25 years of experience leading the discovery and development of oncology therapies including NDA submissions and approvals of multiple oncology assets in the U.S., Europe, Japan, and China. 

Before joining Vir Biotechnology in October 2026, Dr. Liu served as Chief Medical Officer of Nuvation Bio, a global oncology company focused on developing cancer treatments, where he built and led its global clinical research and development organization, helped shape its development portfolio, and supported the launch of multiple Phase 3 studies. Previously, he was Chief Medical Officer at 3D Medicines, where he established and led the global clinical research and development organization spanning multiple functions and oversaw development activities across a broad portfolio of programs. Earlier in his career, Dr. Liu served as Executive Medical Director, Clinical R&D, Lymphoma/CLL and Global Lead Physician at Celgene Corporation and also held several leadership roles at Bristol Myers Squibb. He began his industry career as a scientist at AstraZeneca. 

Dr. Liu received an M.D. in Clinical Medicine from Beijing Medical University (Peking University School of Medicine), an M.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Toledo and a Ph.D. in Bioengineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
